Creation - Children will know that there are two stories of Creation in the Book of Genesis. Understand what being made in the image and likeness of God means and the responsibility  to use our God given talents. Know some reasons for praising God creator of the world.

Multi Cultural week- Sikhism

Miracles and sacrament of the sick- Know a number of miracles of Jesus and identify how his actions brought change to people's lives. Know about some places of pilgrimage and prayer for the sick. Understand that the Sacrament of the Sick is an important Celebration for those who are ill.

Parables and sayings of Jesus - Children will know some important Parables and sayings of Jesus. they will understand the Kingdom of God was part of the  language used by Jesus to explain his teachings.

Advent- Preparing for the birth of Jesus and his second coming.



Throughout the year we will be working on several genres many of which will be linked to our new ‘Golden Thread’ theme – Fossil Fuels & Climate Change.  The genres to be covered include; Narrative - Folk Tales, Quest stories, Legends and Fairy stories. Non Fiction - recounts, balanced arguments, leaflets, persuasive writing and explanation texts. 

Spelling: The children each have a spelling booklet which is distributed on a Monday and collected back in on the following Friday. This covers spelling rules and patterns for Y5 and other age related vocabulary. The spelling booklet is the main English homework resource. However, writing and grammar homework may and will be set where and when required. 


Arithmetic will be key at the start of Yr5 and all through this academic year. Children will recap all 4 operations. Children will consolidate place value including decimals. Children will reason using the 4 operations and inverse operation questions. Children will study number properties including square numbers and prime numbers. All through the term, we will solve mathematical puzzles and logic problems. Using the 4 operations, the children will work on fractions and their link to division, decimals and percentages.


Earth, Sun and Moon

Children will be able to describe the movement of the earth, and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system. Describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth. use the idea of the Earth's rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. Know that the seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth in relation to the sun.

Computing- E- Safety online including chat rooms and use of mobile phones.



Computer science - Kodu.


Fossil Fuels and Climate change which is linked to our visit to Big Pit Coal Museum in Wales.

Children will understand how fossil fuels were mined in the UK (coal) and their role in the industrial revolution. Pupils will understand the difficulties faced by those who worked there. Pupils will know that fossil fuels are a diminishing resource and the impact of burning fossil fuels has on our world.
