Welcome to our Autumn Term in Nursery!
Our curriculum is designed to stimulate and inspire our children through real context that excites and engages them in learning. We use a knowledge based curriculum that is underpinned by our school values and catholic social teaching. The curriculum is designed sequentially to build on prior learning and prepare our children for the next stage in their education. Through visits, visitors and real life learning we develop cultural capital. Communication and language is at the heart of our curriculum; it underpins all aspects of learning to equip children with the knowledge, skill and confidence to share, develop and extend their learning.
| Teaching and Learning during our Autumn Term |
Below, our curriculum map shows how we will develop our skills and knowledge across the areas of the EYFS. Our first half-term will be focusing on our Topic 'All about Me'

Autumn 1 Focus – Settling into Nursery
During our first half term, our main priority is ensuring that every child feels happy, safe and secure in their new nursery environment. We know that starting nursery is a big milestone, and we take the time to build strong, trusting relationships with each child so they feel confident and valued.
Through carefully planned activities, consistent routines and plenty of opportunities for play, we encourage the children to explore their new surroundings, develop their independence and make new friendships. Our nurturing environment allows children to learn at their own pace, helping them to grow in confidence as they discover the exciting experiences nursery has to offer.
By the end of the half term, our aim is for every child to feel settled, confident and eager to learn through play, ready to embrace the wonderful journey ahead.
Religious Education
This half term, our Nursery children will begin their RE journey by exploring the wonderful story of Creation. Through stories, songs, prayer and hands-on activities, the children will discover that God created our beautiful world and that everything He made is good.
We will encourage the children to notice and appreciate the wonders of creation by exploring the outdoors, observing the changing seasons and caring for plants and animals. Through creative activities such as painting, collage, natural artwork and role play, the children will reflect on the beauty of God's world and how we can help to look after it.
Together, we will:
- Listen to and retell the story of Creation.
- Explore the natural world through outdoor learning.
- Thank God for His wonderful gifts through prayer and song.
- Create artwork inspired by nature.
- Learn simple ways to care for God's world by showing kindness to people, animals and the environment.
Our aim is for every child to develop a sense of awe and wonder, recognising that they are a unique and special part of God's creation.
Maths
Our Maths journey will start by us practising all of our early maths skills, including counting in rote, using 1:1 correspondence and categorising. Our learning will involve lots of number songs and exploring numbers in different ways. We will also be exploring colour and shape.

Phonics
In Phonics we will be learning all about different sounds around us! We will be exploring different sounds in our environment through lots of sound games and singing!
Please take a look at our Little Wandle information further down the page for ideas of what to do at home!
EYFS at Our Lady of the Wayside
At Our Lady of the Wayside our curriculum is designed in a sequential way from when children join us at the start of Nursery until they move into KS1 at the end of Reception. Below details the skills, development and knowledge we want our children to know, understand and do at the end of each term. This follows the progression within Development Matters.
Little Wandle Foundations
In Nursery we follow Little Wandle Foundations, this focuses on oral blending, sharing stories and singing rhymes. It is part of the Little Wandle Foundations program that helps get children ready for the main Little Wandle program as they enter Reception.

We have a real love for learning through our story time sessions, please find below our core texts for our Summer Term.
