Year 5 Curriculum


Christmas unit

Children will know the main features of the Christmas story and understand some of the difficulties faced by the characters in the story

Baptism Unit

Children will reference Gospel accounts of the Baptism of Jesus. They will be able to describe, sequence and explain many signs, symbols and actions in the Sacrament of Baptism.


Children know that Lent is a season of change for Christians to become more like Christ. Understand some things that damage human relationships and consequences of giving into temptations that are wrong. Recognise that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is the Church's celebration of God's forgiveness of sin.

Holy week

Children learn many of the events of the last week of Jesus' life. Understand the reasons why some people wanted to kill Jesus. Know the story of the Passover and recognise key links between this story, the Last Supper and the celebration of Mass.


We will be travelling through a portal into another world as we study The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. The fantasy genre will inspire us to write our own 'out of this world' fantasy story. We will also learn how to write an explanation and this will be linked to our thematic unit - Let's go to another planet. Vocabulary, grammar, spelling and punctuation learning will continue to be a focus in our reading and writing. Remember to look at your teacher's English page for support with your homework.


Mental Maths - practice and develop oral and mental skills including recalling rapidly and accurately multiplication facts up to 10x10 and their related division facts; adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers mentally applying these calculations to larger numbers

Maths – Making connections between fractions, decimals and percentages. Using ratio and proportion to solve problems. Understanding a range of measures including length, mass and capacity. Following on - area and perimeter.

Handling data including: Construct frequency tables, pie charts and bar and line graphs, estimating and measuring, reading scales, time, measuring angles, plotting coordinates, solving real life problems using any of the four operations. Looking at properties of 2D and 3D shapes,
